Arctic Acclimatization & Sleep Optimization (ARKTOS) Research Center
The ARKTOS Research Laboratory is a newly established, congressionally appropriated cold-weather operations research facility, housed within the Baylor Research & Innovation Collaborative (BRIC). Led by Dr. Cory Smith, the lab conducts advanced research on rapid acclimatization, combat casualty care, tactical decision-making, sleep optimization, and field-based biomedical device testing. Its centerpiece is an 18-by-22-foot environmental chamber capable of simulating temperatures as low as -35°C (-31°F) and altitudes up to 28,000 feet, enabling high-fidelity medical and tactical simulations under extreme conditions. By bringing these capabilities in-house, ARKTOS gives the Department of Defense, industry partners, and academic collaborators access to specialized resources and field experts that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive to develop independently.

Arctic Environmental Chamber
Operational as of the April 2026 grand opening.
Simulates deep cold and high-altitude oxygen
conditions for multi-night human studies.
Phase II — Funded, Upcoming
Arctic Motion Simulation Chamber
Combines environmental simulation with a motion platform to simulate ground transport, air transport
(up to 24,000 ft.), and snow/mountain terrain.
Supported by $2M in FY 2026 appropriations.
