Birkeland Current
Birkeland Current is a small business focused on wireless sensor technology research and development. John Fitch, the company’s founder and owner, says that for a small business like his, the BRIC is a great environment for innovation and growth.
Birkeland Current has collaborations with faculty in a number of Baylor departments including physics as well as electrical and mechanical engineering. The company was recently awarded a two-year, $3.9 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Fast Track grant from the National Institute on Ageing to demonstrate the effectiveness of machine learning to assess daily function of persons with cognitive decline.
The BRIC is a very impressive storefront when we bring clients into our offices,” said Fitch. “We’ve also benefitted from what I call the casual collaborative aspects of the BRIC, which allow us to work closely and share ideas with Baylor faculty members right here in the building.”
